Put on a Happy Face: Stocks Dip as Optimistic Fed Ends Bond Buying

That went remarkably well. The Federal Reserve released a hawk-tinged statement from its October FOMC meeting–and stocks bent but did not break.

Associated Press

The S&P 500 dipped 0.1% to 1,982.30 today, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average has slipped 0.2% to 16,974.31. The Nasdaq Composite fell 0.3% to 4,549.23.

Here’s what happened: As expected, the Fed ended its bond buying, but left the “considerable time” between the end of asset purchases and the first rate hike intact. A little more surprising: It painted an alnost rosy picture of the U.S. economy that all but ignored the market turmoil of the last month. The Fed called the risks to the job outlook and economy “nearly balanced,” spotted “solid job gains” and noted that the “underutilization of labor resources. is gradually diminishing.” CRT Capital’s David Ader takes it all in:

Bottom line is that this is a bit more optimistic than before with some enthusiasm for labor market and household spending.  Inflation remains an issue and mentions energy and ‘other’ factors (presumably the dollar) and so that extends this concern a bit as does the idea of “Market-based measures of inflation compensation having declined  (whatever that is). We look for extended period to disappear in Dec or very very soon so that’s moot point.  Note that distant Fed fund futures are very little changed which makes sense.

ISI Group’s Dennis DeBusschere hopes the Fed is reading things right:

…although inflation is clearly front and center, they are for now talking about temporary influences, and they note that labor underutilization is gradually diminishing. Hope they are correct on inflation expectations being wrong and temporary influences keeping inflation low. Market could react very poorly to inflation exp being correct and influences being more than just temporary.

Making the market’s recent gains temporary, too.

Top Semiconductor Companies To Own For 2014

Just yesterday, there was a ireside chatbetween Hans Mosesmann and John Byrne, the Senior VP and Chief Sales Officer ofAdvanced Micro Devices, Inc (NYSE: AMD), at the Raymond James Systems, Semiconductors, Software & Supply Chain Conference and the transcript of the chat is now available on Seeking Alpha here. John has been with the company for six years and has beenthe Chief Sales Officer since August of last year. I should point out that we have had AMD in our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio since last summer and its been an up and down ride for us with the down ride usually coming after earnings reports (right now, we are down around 3.88%). With that in mind, here are a few highlights from the ireside chatwith John Byrne:

Staying in the The PC Market. John began by talking about Advanced Micro Devices shift in strategy, but he quickly reiterated that they aren abandoning the PC market because:

Top 5 India Stocks To Buy Right Now: Advantest Corp (ATE)

Advantest Corporation, incorporated in December 1954, is a part of Advantest group. The Company operates in three segments: semiconductor and component test system segment; mechatronics system segment, focusing on peripheral devices including test handlers and device interfaces, and services, support and others segment. The semiconductor and component test system segment provides customers with test system products for the semiconductor industry and the electronic component industry. The mechatronics system segment focuses on peripheral devices to the semiconductor and component test systems. The services, support and others segment consists of comprehensive customer solutions provided in connection with the semiconductor and component test system and mechatronics system segments, support services and an equipment lease business.

Semiconductor and Component Test Systems Segment

Semiconductor and component test systems are used during the semiconductor and electronic component manufacturing process to confirm that a semiconductor functions properly. Semiconductor and component test systems consist of test systems for memory semiconductors and test systems for non memory semiconductors. Advantest test systems for memory semiconductors are test systems designed to test high-speed/high performance dynamic random access memory (DRAM) semiconductors used in equipment such as personal computers and servers, as well as flash memory semiconductors used in digital consumer products.

Test systems for memory semiconductors consist of a mainframe and one or more test heads. During testing, a device interface is attached to the test head. During the front-end testing process, wafers are loaded by a prober and are connected to the test system for memory semiconductors through the device interface. Electric signals between the die and the test systems for memory semiconductors are transmitted through probe pins located in the device interface and tested. After front-end te! sting is completed, the wafer is diced into separate dies and properly functioning dies are packaged. During back-end testing, test handlers are used to load these packaged devices onto the test heads, and electric signals are transmitted between the devices and the test heads via the device interface and tested. The test results are analyzed by the test systems for memory semiconductorshardware circuits and software programs. Customized software programs for each semiconductor are required to analyze the semiconductor tests and test data.

Advantest main product lines of test systems for memory semiconductors are the T5500 series, the T5300 series and the T5700 series. The T5593 is a test system targeted at the market for high speed memory semiconductors, such as DDR2- Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory (SDRAM) and Synchronous Graphics Random Access Memory (SGRAM). The T5383 is a multi-functional test system for memory semiconductors that reduces testing costs for semiconductor manufacturers. Advantest main line of test systems for non memory semiconductors relates to test systems for SoC semiconductors, test systems for liquid crystal display (LCD) driver integrated circuits and test systems for semiconductors used in car electronics. The T6577 test systems for SoC semiconductors in the T6500 series were primarily developed to test micro controller unit (MCU) and SoC semiconductors that control digital consumer products at the production lines. The T6300 series are test systems for LCD driver integrated circuits used with high-definition LCD displays. The T7721, T7722 and T7723 are test systems for non memory semiconductors for mixed signal integrated circuits. The T8571A is a test system for non memory semiconductors that is primarily used to evaluate and analyze CCDs which are image sensors.

Mechatronics System Segment

The Main products in the Mechatronics System Segment are test handlers which handle semiconductor devices and automate the te! sting, an! d device interfaces which are the interfaces with devices being tested. Test handlers are used with semiconductor and component test systems to handle, condition temperature, contact and sort semiconductors and other electronic components during the back-end testing of the semiconductor manufacturing process. Advantest test handlers are sold primarily in conjunction with the sale of its semiconductor and component test systems. The M6242 test handler for test systems for memory semiconductors, including DDR-3SDRAM, can handle up to 512 semiconductors at a time. Advantest test handlers for non memory semiconductors, including SoC semiconductors, are the M4841, the M4741A and the M4742A, among others.

Advantest develops and manufactures device interfaces for semiconductor and component test systems and supplies device interfaces, such as high performance and high density connectors, socket boards and sockets. Nissan's done better this year than electronics maker Advantest (NYSE: ATE  ) , but this stock absolutely blew up over the past week. Advantest's shares shot higher by more than 9%, wiping out pessimism over the company's weak earnings released a few weeks ago. Advantest's net loss and operating profit both fell below its guidance, and despite this week's investor optimism, the future's murky for this company. Financial site TheStreet downgraded the stock last week, citing Advantest's falling earnings, among other issues.

Top Growth Companies To Buy For 2014

We haven’t had many reasons to talk about Lululemon Athletica (LULU) recently. But, given the headline-making drama at the yogawear- and athletic apparel-maker, this period of quiet is probably the cleansing breath the company has hoped for.

Analysts had seemingly unconditional love for Lululemon before its recent troubles, and now that it’s on the upswing–Lululemon’s up 11% during the past three months, even if it’s down 30% on the year–it no surprise that the love is getting stronger.

BB&T analyst Paul Alexander, for instance, initiated coverage on Lululemon with a Buy rating and $50 price target in a note today. He explains why:

After a challenging year and a half for the company, we think Lululemon is poised to stabilize results. We expect gradual near-term improvement due to new merchandising and design strategies, new traffic-driving initiatives, and better public sentiment toward the brand. lulu’s significant long-term growth potential should also limit downside, creating a positive risk/reward.

I have heard many people comment about the insurance policies for cars, houses, life, assets, etc. The arguments always revolve around the same issue: Is it really necessary? What are the chances to be hit by a Hurricane, or to meet a sudden death? Well, nobody really knows. Some individuals however, sleep better when they know a policy backs their life investments. Here, I will look into three insurance companies that concentrate on different policies, or geographies. These are: China Life (LFC), and Conseco (CNO).

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Udovich]

Small cap Checkpoint Systems, Inc (NYSE: CKP) fights shoplifting or retail theft and other forms of"shrinkthat costs retailers over $112 billion worldwide last year (according to a study funded by the company), meaning it might be an interesting stock to take a closer look at and to compare its performance with that of SPDR S&P Retail ETF (NYSEARCA: XRT) and PowerShares Dynamic Retail ETF (NYSEARCA: PMR). Just how bad can shoplifting or shrink be for a retailer? Troubled retailer J.C. Penney Company, Inc (NYSE: JCP) has just reported that shoplifting took a full percentage point off the department store chain's profit margins during the quarter. Moreover and given that tens of millions of Americans are now facing higher health insurance costs thanks to Obamacare (which will likely impact consumer discretionary spending),retailerswill need to find ways to shore up their margins and bottom lines by preventingretail theft with solutions from company like Checkpoint Systems.

Top 10 Trucking Stocks To Own For 2014

With economic data taking a backseat to a slew of better-than-expected earnings reports, the broad-based S&P 500 continues to knock off one all-time record close after another. For skeptics like me, that's an opportunity to see whether companies have earned their current valuations.

Keep in mind that some companiesdeservetheir current valuations. Take railroad operator Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP  ) for example. Union Pacific grew profit by 11% in its most recent quarter as it was able to offset demand weakness in coal with higher prices. With many railroad operators predicting a pickup in shipments in the second half of the year, Union Pacific certainly looks to be in great shape moving forward.

Still, other companies might deserve a kick in the pants. Here's a look at three companies that could be worth selling.

Raise the yellow caution flag
In spite of trucking company YRC Worldwide's (NASDAQ: YRCW  ) share price doubling last week following the company's first quarterly profit in six years (that's right...six years), shares are still down a mind-boggling 99.9928% over the past decade. Somehow avoiding bankruptcy a few years back by diluting existing shareholders into oblivion, YRC has investors now thinking the company may be on the mend. However, its history makes mebelieve otherwise.

10 Best Freight Stocks To Buy For 2015: Auxilium Pharmaceuticals Inc.(AUXL)

Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, Inc. operates as a specialty biopharmaceutical company primarily in the United States. It focuses on developing and marketing products to urologists, endocrinologists, primary care physicians, hand surgeons, and rheumatologists, as well as to orthopedic, general, and plastic surgeons. The company markets XIAFLEX (collagenase clostridium histolyticum), an injectable collagenase enzyme for the treatment of adult Dupuytren?s contracture; and Testim, a topical 1% testosterone gel for the treatment of hypogonadism. The company?s clinical development products include XIAFLEX that is in Phase III clinical trials for the treatment of Peyronie?s disease, as well as in Phase II clinical trials for the treatment of Adhesive Capsulitis. In addition, it has rights to develop other products for the treatment of pain, urologic disease, and hormone replacement using its transmucosal film delivery system. The company has a strategic alliance with Asahi Kasei Ph arma Corporation for the development, commercialization, and supply of XIAFLEX, a biologic for the treatment of Dupuytren?s contracture and Peyronie?s disease. Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, Inc. was founded in 1999 and is headquartered in Malvern, Pennsylvania.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jake L'Ecuyer]

Auxilium Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: AUXL) was also up, gaining 12.11 percent to $21.67 following FDA approval of its Peyronie's disease treatment, Xiaflex.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One potential earnings short-squeeze candidate is biotechnology player Auxilium Pharmaceuticals (AUXL), which is set to release numbers on Thursday before the market open. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Auxilium Pharmaceuticals to report revenue of $91.43 million on a loss of 3 cents per share.

During the last quarter, this company reported revenue of $66.2 million and GAAP reported sales were 10% lower than the prior-year quarter's $73.6 million. Also during the last quarter, this company reported non-GAAP EPS of -12 cents per share and GAAP EPS of -17 cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Auxilium Pharmaceuticals is pretty high at 11.1%. That means that out of the 39.84 million shares in the tradable float, 5.14 million shares are sold short by the bears. This is a decent short interest on a stock with a relatively low tradable float. If the bulls get the earnings news they're looking for, then shares of AUXL could easily rip higher post-earnings as the bears rush to cover some of their short bets.

From a technical perspective, AUXL is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last three months, with shares soaring higher from its low of $13.87 to its intraday high of $18.42 a share. During that uptrend, shares of AUXL have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of AUXL within range of triggering a major breakout trade post-earnings.

If you're bullish on AUXL, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some key overhead resistance levels at $18.50 to $19.60 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that registers near or above its three-month average action of 834,059 shares. If that breakout hits, then AUXL will set up

Hot Low Price Stocks For 2014

By Tracey Ryniec

Value investors have long looked to the price-to-earnings ratio as a means to finding value stocks. However, Benjamin Graham, long considered to be the "father" of value investing, found that a low price-to-earnings ratio wasn't enough to unearth the true undervalued companies.

Graham combined the low price-to-earnings ratios with the power of growth by using the PEG ratio. The PEG ratio is calculated by taking the price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio and dividing it by the growth rate.

Normally, a stock with a PEG ratio under 1.0 is considered a "value".

With the S&P 500, the Russell 2000 and the Mid-cap 400 trading at new record highs, you might think it would be hard to find ANY value.

Screening for PEG

I created a screen for PEG ratios under 1.0 on Zacks free Custom Screener.

Just this one criteria gave me 372 stocks. That's not too shabby.

But all 372 companies are not necessarily good value stocks. I eliminated companies that had a Zacks rank of 4 or 5, which are Zacks Rank Sells, and only searched for Buy ranked stocks.

Advisors' Opinion:

The launch of these investment vehicles has been a source of excitement in the power industry, particularly with NRG Energy Inc’s (NYSE: NRG) successful initial public offering (IPO) of NRG Yield Inc (NYSE: NYLD), the firm’s YieldCo. That’s prompted a number of utilities to announce similar plans. The question is whether these new securities offer enduring value, similar to what’s happened in the traditional MLP space, or whether they’re just another way for firms to raise cash by making a cynical play for yield-starved income investors.
