Let us all welcome the year 2013 with varied ideas to bring home tax planning for you and your family and also take you through Investment Strategies for investing your money. The following thirteen important Investment Tips for the year 2013 will surely help you to achieve your desired results :-
1. Income-tax file for one and all:
In whose name to make the investment yes, this should be the first point in the back of your mind before planning investment strategies for 2013, it is time now for every tax payer of the country to make a resolution to have a separate independent Income-tax File for every member in the family. The objective of this is to achieve tax planning and cut down on your income-tax payments. Firstly think of your wife and if she does not have till now a separate independent Income-tax File, then start of having such independent Income-tax File for your wife. The concept of gift and loans in the name of your wife will help you to achieve this. However, do remember that your wife can receive gift from any relative other than her husband, her father in law and her mother in law. However, wife is free to take loan with reasonable interest from anyone including the husband. Similarly adopt the concept of gifting your major children and start having separate independent Income-tax File for your major children.
2. Investments for Hindu Undivided Family tax file in your kitty
Investments made by your Hindu Undivided Family can bring rich dividends for you in the year 2013. If you are a Hindu, then it is time now to find out whether you have a separate independent Income-tax File of your Hindu Undivided Family. If still now you have not been instrumental in opening a separate Income-tax File for your Hindu Undivided Family, then right now is the time when you should start such separate Income-tax File in your family so that it helps you in the process of tax planning. The HUF file apart from enjoying the basic income-tax exemption of Rs. 2,00,000 will also continue to enjoy tax deduction in terms of section 80C as well as deduction for interest on housing loans. Also do remember that your HUF file can come into existence whether you have a son or just a daughter and even if you do not have any children, still your HUF file can come into existence right now.
3. Plan for Investments for your minor children
If you are having a minor child or a grand child, plan right now the different strategies for the safety and security of your minor child in particular. If you want to have lots of income and wealth in the name of the minor child and would still like no clubbing of the income of the minor child, then it is time now to think of creating a separate independent hundred per cent "Specific Beneficiary Trust" in the name of the minor child based on the principles enunciated by the various courts of India including the Supreme Court of India so that the income of the minor child with special terms and conditions mentioned in the Trust Deed is not clubbed with the income of the parents. It is also possible for you to think of starting a PPF account in the name of the minor child for his or her safety and also do not forget to take out Life Insurance Policies specially in the name of your minor child which will help the process of investment strategy in the years to come for the safety, security of your loving children.
4. Deposits in savings bank account:
In the year 2013 also consider keeping money in the Savings Bank Account specially because the interest rates in the Savings Bank Account have gone up and moreover the biggest advantage is that from the Financial Year 2012-13 the interest income from Deposits in Savings Bank Account in Bank, a Co-operative Society and a Post Office will be exempted up to Rs. 10,000 as per section 80 TTA of the Income tax Act, 1961. This benefit is available to Individuals and Hindu Undivided Families. The "Time Deposits" interest income would not enjoy the deduction.
5. Zero Coupon Bond:
Think of investing in Zero Coupon Bond in the year 2013 and it should be taken as a preferred tool of instrument of investment specially by persons not interested in regular income. Generally the maturity time of Zero Coupon Bond is ten years. Also look into the tax planning aspect at the time of maturity. Because of the benefit of Cost Inflation Index tax will be virtually nil on your income from Zero Coupon Bond at the time of maturity. It is also good to gift Zero Coupon Bonds to your minor children aged eight years and above.
6. Tax free bonds:
If you are coming in the highest income bracket, namely if you are having income exceeding Rs. 10 lakhs in a year, then surely it is worthwhile for you to make your investment in tax free bonds specially if you calculate the impact of income-tax savings on the same. The investment in the year 2013 in tax free bonds would be better than Bank Fixed Deposits.
7. Postal Instruments:
Do invest in Postal Office Instruments like National Savings Certificate VIII issue, National Savings Certificates IX issue, Post Office Time Deposit Receipts, as well as in Senior Citizen Savings Scheme specially keeping in view the aspects connected with tax deduction under section 80C and also the rise in the interest rates. The above items from Post Office will be eligible for 80C deduction. There has also been some increase recently in the interest of these investments.
8. Continue investment in Public Provident Fund:
In the year 2013 also please continue to keep your investment in Public Provident Fund Account specially because of the fact that the interest income from Public Provident Fund will now be 8.8 per cent. Moreover, such income will continue to be exempted from income-tax. Also do open Public Provident Fund Account specially for your minor children and your spouse. However, the total investment in Public Provident Fund Account for you and your minor children taken together in a financial year should not exceed Rs.1 lakh.
9. Real Estate Investments for the family:
In case you do not yet own your own residential house property then it is time now to start investing in new residential house property so that you can have your dream house. The investment in residential property would also bring home for you special tax deduction under section 24 for interest payment on loan for residential property. The maximum deduction would be Rs.1,50,000 for interest payment. Besides, the repayment housing loan also would enjoy tax deduction under section 80C. It would be better to buy a house in the name of two or more family members so that each one can enjoy tax deduction. From tax angle it would not be worth just to buy a piece of land because no tax benefit is available only on land purchase.

NatGas Exports to Rise: 2 Stocks to Buy Now - Analyst Blog
Top 10 Construction Material Stocks To Invest In 2015
The U.S. Department of Energy has recently approved a large facility in Texas which will be utilised to export natural gas. Worth $10 billion, the project paves the way for the U.S. to emerge as a major exporter of energy resources in global markets. The facility in Texas called Freeport LNG is being supported by a group of private investors, which includes the likes of ConocoPhillips (COP). The project has inked initial contracts with a 20-year horizon with Chubu Electric Power Company, Osaka Gas Co Ltd and BP plc (BP). The first two are prominent utilities from Japan and also have a stake in the project.
A Paradigm Shift
Originally, such terminals were built for the import of natural gas. It was believed at the time that domestic demand for natural gas would rise significantly. At the same time, it was economically unviable to exploit indigenous natural gas reserves even five years ago.
However, new technological processes have changed the situation completely. Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing has resulted in a significant increase in natural gas production. In fact, the U.S. is now the world's largest producer of natural gas.
The Obama administration has welcomed these developments and awarded conditional authorization to the Texas-based project. Such approval is required for countries which do not have Free Trade Agreements (FTA) with the U.S. This includes several key European and Asian trading partners.
In the past, a similar facility in Sabine Pass, Louisiana owned by Cheniere Energy, Inc. (LNG) has received approval. In this case, however, exports will be made to nations who have free trade agreements with the U.S. The issue is now of particular importance because the Freeport LNG decision may clear the way for the other 19 applications for gas exports to countries without ! FTAs with the U.S.
Pros and Cons
Freeport LNG was approved after determining whether the projects benefits exceeded the possible negatives for the U.S. economy. Those in favour or natural gas exports believe that these exports will have several beneficial effects. Firstly, it will improve the nation's trade balance. Secondly, it will promote the adoption of natural gas which is a more environment-friendly energy resource.
However, the policy's opponents are of the view that this will result in a rise in domestic prices. This would have a detrimental effect on sectors such as the chemical industry as well as consumers who have enjoyed the advantages of low natural gas prices.
Among these is The Dow Chemical Company (DOW) which has voiced its opposition to gas exports on several occasions. The company has said that U.S. natural gas reserves would be best used internally than through exports.
Another vocal opponent of natural gas exports is chairman of the Senate Energy Committee Ron Wyden. Both Dow and Senator Wyden have said they supported the Freeport LNG decision because the energy department has said they would approve such projects on a case to case basis.
Our Picks
The decision to allow natural gas exports will benefit companies from the oil and natural gas sector. This is because a higher level of exports will increase domestic prices in the U.S. Of course, exports will also reduce the price of natural gas across nations. Therefore, the viability of such exports will depend on the quantum of the price differential.
We believe two companies are good picks given current policy changes and both hold good Zacks Rank. First up is Texas-based Sandridge Mississippian Trust II (SDR). It holds a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) and has expected earnings growth of 5.33%. The forward price-to-earnings Ratios (P/E) for the current financial year (F1) is 5.82.
Another good choice is Chesapeake Energy Corp (CHK), the second largest produc! er of nat! ural gas in the country. It holds a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) and has expected earnings growth of 28.83%. Chesapeake has a P/E (F1) of 14.47.
The demand for energy across the world continues to increase every year. If U.S. companies continue to be price competitive, there is no reason why they cannot dominate the natural gas segment in the years to come.

Leading and Lagging Sectors
In trading on Thursday, basic materials shares were relative leaders, up on the day by about 1.20 percent. Among the leading sector stocks, gains came from Axiall (NYSE: AXLL), Materion (NYSE: MTRN), Huntsman (NYSE: HUN) and Joy Global (NYSE: JOY). - [By Seth Jayson]
Margins matter. The more Materion (NYSE: MTRN ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Materion's competitive position could be.
- [By Ben Levisohn]
Materion (MTRN) has fallen 8% to $29.75 after the gold refiner said earnings should come in at around 20 cents a share, well below analyst forecasts. Outerwall (OUTR), meanwhile, has jumped 12% to $64.08 after an activist investor took a big stake in the company.

Why Prestige Brands Shares Soared
Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.
What: Shares of Prestige Brands (NYSE: PBH ) , a marketer of over-the-counter health care and household cleaning products, jumped as much as 14% after it announced the acquisition of Australia's Care Pharmaceuticals.
So what: Although financial terms of the deal weren't announced, the press release does note that Care Pharmaceuticals generates approximately $18 million in revenue annually from its core line of over-the-counter health products -- most notably Fess, which treats cold and allergy symptoms. Even more important, this acquisition gives Prestige Brands the opportunity to rapidly increase its Asia-Pacific presence. On the heels of the announcement, research firm Sidoti upgraded Prestige Brands to "buy" from "neutral" and hiked its price target to $41 from $32, implying 35% upside from yesterday's close. Research firm B. Riley joined the party as well, initiating Prestige with a buy rating and a $38 price target.
Now what: Moving into the rapidly growing Asia-Pacific region is a smart move for Prestige, which certainly could use the spark, with organic growth of its over-the-counter products drying up domestically. In the fourth quarter, Prestige Brands' 14 core OTC products delivered 9.3% organic growth. For this fiscal year, Wall Street anticipates that growth will be nearly flat. I'm not sold on Prestige's lofty valuation just yet, as acquisitions take time to integrate and there are often some "hiccups" involved for the acquiring party. However, I would certainly recommend keeping a watchful eye on Prestige Brands by adding it to your Watchlist.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Robert Rapier]
The second, and riskier, option is to buy MLPs engaged in natural gas production. While these tend to have some portion of their output hedged against sharp price fluctuations, they retain much more exposure to the ups and downs of natural gas prices than the midstream partnerships, which function as toll collectors.EV Energy Partners(NASDAQ: EVEP),Atlas Resource Partners(NYSE: ARP),BreitBurn Energy Partners(NASDAQ: BBEP) andMemorial Production Partners(NASDAQ: MEMP) are some of the upstream (oil and gas production) partnerships in the US shale plays.

Atlas Resource Partners (NYSE: ARP ) offers the lowest cost to DCF and the second-highest yield of the group. The company is active in the Barnett Shale, Appalachian Basin, the Raton Basin, the Black Warrior Basin and the Mississippi Lime with an interest in over 12,000 producing natural gas and oil wells. The partnership's coverage ratio just missed a top rank as well, and the units could be a solid addition. May saw insider purchases by four officers for 52,530 units at an average price of $19.73 per unit with no insider selling in the past twelve months.

China is set to ease the one child policy, something that could benefit Chinese stocks in general but be especially beneficial to insurance stocks like China Life Insurance Company Ltd (NYSE: LFC) and CNinsure Inc (NASDAQ: CISG) plus health care stocks like Mindray Medical International Ltd(NYSE: MR) and Concord Medical Services Hldg Ltd (NYSE: CCM). First, lets be clear that China is NOT abolishing the one child policy as the changes will merelyallow married couples to have two children if one spouse is an only child plus it will be up to Chinas 34 province-level administrations to revisetheir laws and put the new policy into effect. Moreover, Chinas family-planning bureaucracy employs more than 500,000 full-time workers and six million part-time workers all the way down to the village level tocollect billions of dollars in fines and these bureaucrats have fought for years against policy changes meaning they could throw up roadblocks if not placated. With that said, the insurance and health care sectors are two sectors with publicly Chinese stocks that look set totake advantage of the coming changes.

It's easy to place too much attention on the immediate negatives and too little attention on the bigger positives. I made this mistake in 2011 after buying shares in Mindray Medical (NYSE: MR ) . I ended up selling my shares for a loss when the stock fell due to weaker-than-expected demand for its medical devices in Europe and the U.S.
